Walmart Paid CDL Training: How the Program Works and Who Qualifies
What is Walmart paid CDL training? It is the Associate to Driver program, where Walmart pays current employees to earn a Class A CDL and then moves them into its Private Fleet.
Walmart pays its own associates to earn a CDL. Here is who can enter, how long it runs and what drivers earn afterward.
Key takeaways
- Current employees onlyThe program is built for people who already work at Walmart, so outside applicants cannot enter it. (Fortune, September 2026)
- 16 weeksFortune reported that the program runs 16 weeks: 8 weeks of training, then 8 weeks hauling freight with a trainer. (Fortune, September 2026)
- 1 yearAssociates need at least 1 year with Walmart and a commercial learner's permit before they start. (Fortune, September 2026)
- $109,000is the average driver pay Walmart reports. First year drivers can earn up to $115,000 and experienced drivers up to $135,000. (Walmart figures via Fortune, September 2026)
- 86% higherThe Walmart average runs about 86% above the Bureau of Labor Statistics median of $58,640 for heavy and tractor trailer drivers. (BLS, May 2025)
- 18 and 21Federal rules still apply: 18 for the permit, 21 to drive across state lines, and a DOT medical certificate. (49 CFR 383.25 and 49 CFR 391.11)
- Company driver jobThis is a company driver path inside a private fleet. It does not lead to a lease or your own truck. (Walmart Private Fleet)

A free CDL sounds like the best deal in trucking, so read the fine print first. Walmart does pay, but only for people who already work there.
This guide shows who qualifies, how the program runs and what the pay looks like next to the national median. It also explains why this is a company driver job and not a step toward owning your own truck.
How does Walmart paid CDL training work?
Walmart runs the program under the name Associate to Driver. It pays eligible employees while they earn a commercial driver's license (CDL), then moves them into its Private Fleet.
A private fleet means Walmart owns the trucks and hauls its own freight instead of hiring a carrier. Fortune reported in September 2026 that the program lasts 16 weeks. The first 8 weeks are training. The next 8 weeks are spent moving freight through Walmart's network with a dedicated trainer.
Associates earn the CDL at no cost. Walmart keeps paying them during training, but public reports do not give the weekly amount. Ask your transportation office before you plan around it.
Walmart ran its first pilot in 2022 around Dallas and Dover, Delaware, and 56 associates earned CDLs. In January 2023 it opened to associates at more than 400 stores, distribution centers, fulfillment centers and transportation offices, as Land Line reported.
The program has grown since. Older coverage described a 12 week format, so the details have changed over time. Confirm the current length with Walmart before you plan around it.
Who qualifies for Walmart paid CDL training?
You qualify if you work at Walmart, have at least 1 year with the company and hold a commercial learner's permit. Federal rules on age, English and a DOT medical exam still apply.
Two sets of rules apply. Walmart sets the entry rules for its own program. Federal rules apply to every CDL driver, no matter who trains them.
What Walmart requires
- You work for Walmart now. The program began with supply chain jobs, and Walmart said in July 2023 that store and Sam's Club associates can join too.
- You have at least 1 year with the company, according to Fortune.
- You hold a commercial learner's permit before class starts.
- You live within range of a Walmart transportation office. The limit was 50 miles in January 2023, and Walmart said in July 2023 that it would stretch to 250 miles by early 2024. Check the current number on the job posting.
What federal rules require
A commercial learner's permit requires you to be 18 or older. It lasts up to 1 year, and you must wait 14 days after getting it before the CDL skills test, under 49 CFR 383.25.
To drive a commercial truck across state lines, the minimum age is 21 under 49 CFR 391.11. You also need to read and speak English well enough to talk with the public and fill out reports, and you must be physically qualified.
Physically qualified means a DOT medical exam. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that CDL holders must pass a physical every 2 years. Make sure your medical certificate shows on your driving record, which our guide to the paper medical card change explains.
Entry level driver training, called ELDT, is required for first time Class A applicants and for Class B holders moving up to Class A. Under FMCSA's ELDT rules, the training must come from a provider on its Training Provider Registry. Ask which registered provider will issue your certificate, then look it up. Our guide on how to check whether a CDL school is still legit shows how.
Can you get Walmart paid CDL training if you do not work there?
No. The program is built for current employees, so you cannot sign up as an outsider.
The way in is a Walmart job, then 1 year of work, then a permit, then an application. Selection is Walmart's call. Ask how seats are given out before you take a job just for this program.
If Walmart is not an option, you have two main routes. One is a self paid program at a community college or private driving school. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says community college programs run 3 to 6 months. The other is a carrier sponsored program, which can cost less up front, but some carriers attach a work commitment or repayment terms. Read that clause before you sign.
FMCSA has also asked for approval to make CDL schools prove they meet the training rules before they are listed. Our report on FMCSA's plan to vet CDL schools before listing explains why the school you pick matters.
How much do Walmart drivers earn after paid CDL training?
Walmart says first year drivers can earn up to $115,000 and experienced drivers up to $135,000. The average driver earns about $109,000, according to the company figures Fortune reported in September 2026.
Pay is a mix of mileage pay and pay for other activity. FreightWaves reported in 2023 that pay rises with tenure and that drivers get company benefits.
| Pay figure | Per year | Per week |
|---|---|---|
| BLS median, heavy and tractor trailer drivers (May 2025) | $58,640 | $1,128 |
| Walmart average driver pay | $109,000 | $2,096 |
| Walmart top first year pay | $115,000 | $2,212 |
| Walmart top experienced pay | $135,000 | $2,596 |
Here is the math. The Walmart average of $109,000 minus the BLS median of $58,640 is $50,360. That is about 86% above the median. Spread over 52 weeks, the Walmart average works out to about $2,096 a week before taxes.
Three cautions apply. "Up to" is a ceiling, so plan around the average. The BLS median covers all heavy and tractor trailer drivers, including local work, so the match is rough. And a yearly number says nothing about how many nights you sleep away from home.
I have run freight as a company driver, a leased owner operator and under my own authority, so I look at two numbers before the yearly headline. Those are the weekly pay and the weeks away from home. Ask for both.
If your goal is your own truck, remember that a company driver's gross pay and an owner operator's gross revenue are not the same thing. See what owner operators keep after expenses before you compare them.
How does Walmart paid CDL training compare to other ways to get a CDL?
Walmart's route costs you nothing and pays you while you train, but only current associates can take it. A self paid school is open to anyone, and a carrier program ties you to that carrier.
| Route | Walmart Associate to Driver | Self paid CDL school | Carrier sponsored training |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who can enter | Current Walmart associates with 1 year and a permit | Anyone who meets state and federal rules | Applicants to that carrier |
| Cost to you | None, per Fortune | You pay. The price varies by school | Varies. Some carriers tie it to a work commitment |
| Pay while training | Yes, amount not reported | None | Varies |
| Length | 16 weeks in 2026. Older reports said 12 | Community college programs run 3 to 6 months, per BLS | Varies |
| Job at the end | Walmart Private Fleet | Your choice of employer | Usually that carrier |
| Reported pay | Average about $109,000 | Depends on the employer | Depends on the carrier |
Is Walmart paid CDL training worth it?
My verdict: if you already work at Walmart, live in range and can handle the schedule, apply. You pay no tuition, you earn while you train, and the reported average is far above the national median.
Think twice if you need to be home every night. Walmart's transportation chief told Fortune the job is intense and not for everyone. FreightWaves reported in 2023 that schedules included one week team runs and five or six day over the road runs. Ask which one you would get.
Skip it as a shortcut to your own truck. A private fleet job is a company driver job. You drive Walmart's truck, so there is no lease on and no authority to learn. That is a good way to build road time, but it does not teach you cost per mile, settlements or lease terms. For that, read what an owner operator is, the lease on carrier terms we checked and the owner operator requirements checklist.
Four things would change my verdict. The first is a training wage below your current pay. The second is a distance rule that leaves you out. The third is a schedule that clashes with your life. The fourth is a commitment to stay that you cannot afford to break.
If you plan to go from company driver to your own truck, the order of steps matters. Our step by step path from company driver to your own truck lays it out. The guide to how trucking authority works covers the last step.
What should you ask before you enter the program?
Get these 7 answers before you apply. Each one decides whether the program fits your life.
- What is the weekly pay during training?
- What is the current distance rule, and which transportation office covers me?
- How many weeks is the current format, and when does the next class start?
- Which registered training provider issues my ELDT certificate?
- What schedule will I get after graduation, and how many nights will I be away?
- Is there any commitment to stay, or any repayment if I leave?
- What happens if I fail the skills test?
What else do people ask about Walmart paid CDL training?
Does Walmart pay for CDL training?
Yes, for its own employees. Under the Associate to Driver program, eligible associates earn a Class A CDL at no cost and are paid while they train. They then join the Private Fleet. People who do not work at Walmart cannot enter the program.
How long is Walmart paid CDL training?
Fortune reported a 16 week program in September 2026: 8 weeks of training and 8 weeks hauling freight with a trainer. Older coverage described 12 weeks, so confirm the current length with Walmart before you plan around it.
Do you need driving experience to qualify?
The reported entry rules are at least 1 year at Walmart and a commercial learner's permit. Prior truck driving experience is not listed.
How old do you have to be to drive for Walmart's Private Fleet?
You must be 18 to get a commercial learner's permit. Federal rules set the minimum age to drive a commercial truck across state lines at 21. Check Walmart's posting for any added rules.
How much do Walmart truck drivers make?
Walmart says first year drivers can earn up to $115,000, experienced drivers up to $135,000, and the average driver about $109,000. The Bureau of Labor Statistics median for all heavy and tractor trailer drivers was $58,640 in May 2025.
Does the training meet federal entry level driver training rules?
Federal rules require first time Class A applicants to complete entry level driver training from a provider on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. Ask which registered provider issues your certificate and look it up before you start.
Will you own a truck after the program?
No. Private Fleet drivers drive Walmart's own trucks, so this is a company driver job. If you want your own truck later, you need a separate plan for leasing on or running your own authority.
This is general information, not career or legal advice. Walmart can change its program at any time. Confirm the details with Walmart's transportation office and the rules with FMCSA.
